One Month

It has been a little over a month since we began seeing the first extreme symptoms of Stevie’s SM.

This weekend we had a breakthrough. On Saturday Stevie began talking to “nobody” – she would basically narrate things for everyone, so she wasn’t talking directly to anyone, but she definitely wanted us to hear what she was saying. By Sunday she was speaking to Aubrey and me. She had moments where anxiety or frustration would take over and words would disappear, but this is a major step in the right direction.

This week her world of communication has continued to expand to include us at home, the nanny that comes 3 days a week, my mom on the phone, and some friends on a playdate at their house. These are HUGE steps of progress!

A huge sign of the hope we have been clinging to. We know that one good weekend does not mean anything near a cure, but it is a small sliver of light shining into the darkness that we had been living in.

While we are certainly celebrating these steps, we are also keeping in mind that this will likely come and go. The good news is that in environments where she feels comfortable she has words again.

So we now feel like we are at the same starting point that other kids who have SM usually start at. We still have a long journey ahead, but hearing our girl’s sweet voice again makes it seem much more manageable.

Please continue to pray for progress and we will continue to update with the progress we see!
